Need blood? Gangolli website is just a click away

Gangulli:June.14: A few years ago, Governor HR Bharadwaj declared Gangolli, 52 km from Udupi, as voluntary blood donors’ village. Taking forward the reputation the Karvali Voluntary Blood Donors Association (KVBDA) of the village had launched a website– www.kvbda.org– with aim of creating a one-stop destination for patients in need of blood with contact details of blood donors across the state.

Today the website boast of details of over 2,000 blood donors. Divakar N Kharvi, founder of the association, said, “Because of some technical glitches we could not upload details of all voluntary blood donors. We will upload the details by the end of July,” he added.

The helpline number which was launched along with the website receives at least 80 calls from patients and hospitals in a month seeking blood. “Most of these calls are from Shimoga, Udupi and Davangere districts,” he added.

Gangolli village is home for over 2,500 people belonging to Kharvi community, who mainly depend on fishing for livelihood.

Since 2007 nearly 1,000 villagers of Gangoli have donated more than 2,000 blood units through donation camps.

Future plans

Divakar said soon a helpline centre exclusively for blood donation will be established in Gangolli. “Recently we launched a free ambulance service for the poor and needy people residing in and around Kundapur taluk,” he said.

“The villagers are also raising funds to set up a blood bank in Kundapur. At present, Kundapur does not have a single blood bank. If a hospital gives us space, we will establish a blood bank soon. We will also request the government to set up a blood bank in Kundapur.

Soon patients and their family members, who require blood units, can contact more than 2,000 blood donors by just logging on to the website of Karvali Voluntary Blood Donors Association (KVBDA) of Gangolli village situated 52 kms away from Udupi.

In view of helping the patients and hospitals KVBDA launched a website in January to upload contact details of blood donors, residing in different parts of the state.

The details include blood group, phone numbers and addresses of blood donors. But due to technical glitches KVBDA could not upload the details of many blood donors.

Sky reaching prices of fresh fish made eggs dearer

Udupi:June.12:The prices of egg have raised from Rs.3.60 per peice to Rs.4.80 due to the sky reaching prices of fresh fish in the Karavali region. Last week, the retail price of egg per piece was Rs.3.60 and wholesale price was Rs.3.00 and now the wholesale price of the egg is increased to Rs.4.00.

Due to the shortage and high sky reaching prices of fresh fish in the market, the non vegetarians are buying eggs for their daily food which created higher demand for the eggs. If the prices of the fresh fish goes up again, certaily the prices of eggs will increase in the future days. Hotels and omlet stalls have more demand for eggs. This is going to be an head ache for the non vegetarians in the coastal region.

Rise in demand for B.Com. course forces colleges to augment seats

MANGALORE, June 11, 2013 : Following increased demand for B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce) course, Mangalore University has begun sanctioning additional seats to many colleges for 2013-14.

The Syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the university, in its meeting on May 17 authorised Vice-Chancellor T. C. Shivashankara Murthy to sanction 25 per cent seats than the allotted seats. Accordingly the colleges seeking additional seats are being sanctioned a maximum of 25 per cent seats, Prof. Murthy told The Hindu.

If the additional 25 per cent seats were filled, and the colleges wanted to open an extra batch then as per the decision of the Syndicate the university would send a three-member committee to inspect the infrastructure available. The reports of the committee would be placed before the Syndicate and if the latter agreed such colleges would be allowed to open additional batches, the Vice-Chancellor said.

In both the cases the university would act only if there was written request from the colleges, he said.

P. S. Yadapadithaya, Registrar (administration) said that many colleges were seeking 10 per cent to 25 per cent additional seats. Some colleges have sought sanctioning extra batches. The additional seats sanctioned were applicable only for the academic year 2013-14. The colleges cannot merge the original intake and additional intake sanctioned and admit students for the academic year 2014-15. The original intake allowed for the current academic year was applicable while admitting students for the next academic year unless changes made based on the next year’s trend.

He said government-aided private colleges and unaided private colleges would have to pay Rs. 3,000 per candidate to the university for additional seats sanctioned. This was not applicable to government colleges. The fee is being collected to check uncontrolled admissions, he said.

Subrahmanya Bhat, Principal, Government First Grade College, Uppinangady, said the college received 204 applications against 60 seats originally sanctioned by the university.

In addition to asking for sanctioning 25 per cent additional seats the college had sought to grant an extra batch to accommodate new applicants.

Why the change?

Udaya Kumar Irvathur, Associate Professor of Commerce, University College, Mangalore said that demand for MBA graduates in corporate sector has come down as they were demanding high salary. Instead the corporate sector was hiring B.Com. graduates as they could be paid less and more employable because of their skills. In addition, Mr. Irvathur said, B.Com. students studied subjects like finance and accounting in depth than BBM students.

The syllabi of BBM were more diluted when compared to the syllabi of B.Com. This could be the reasons why employers prefer B.Com. graduates thus pushing demand for the course, he said.

Ummappa Poojary. P., ex-president, AMUCT:

Mad race for any course is not a healthy trend. Learn lessons from the weakening demand for MBA graduates in the market now. It can happen to B.Com. graduates too. Balance should be maintained in sanctioning intake for courses. Managements of colleges will transfer the burden of extra fee being collected from the university directly to students.

Radhakrishna, principal of Government College, Car Street

Demand for a B.Com course is higher in government colleges as they charge a low fee, which is Rs. 4,000 per candidate. Some Private and aided private colleges charged up to Rs. 20,000 per student. Increasing demand requires more infrastructure facilities.

Subbappa Kaikamba, joint secretary, university commerce teachers’ association

B.Com. graduates are preferred everywhere, from sales jobs to corporate jobs. There will be demand for them. Companies are now absorbing them in larger numbers. A B.Com. graduate can fit into any profile.

Dress code: a toss between freedom and discipline

MANGALORE, June 11, 2013 : After spending several years under uniforms students just want to live life young and free as they make it to the college.

Colin Miranda, from St. Aloysius College said, “This is the only time students can experiment and improve their sense of dressing. This also helps learn to dress smartly when they start work. A reasonable dress code gives you freedom along with responsibility. I think introducing uniform just kills innovation and individuality.”

But Eshana Kaveriappa, from Roshni Nilaya, does not have to bother about it as yet. “Our college isn’t very particular on wearing only salwars, so it isn’t an issue,” she says. Shravan Kumar, from Mangalore University, said, “We don’t have a specified dress code. Different departments are at the liberty to choose the dress,” he says. Shalom Aaron, from Manipal Institute of Communication, says the college does not prescribe a dress code. “Shorts and Bermudas are looked down upon. But there isn’t a problem as long as the cloth isn’t too revealing.”

Deepika Joellen, from St. Agnes College, does not have any problem with the dress code. “But I wish they would allow us to use our phones on the campus. I don’t mind switching it off while in class but a blanket ban is very inconvenient.” Ngukatoli Yeppo, from St. Aloysius College, says “We are allowed to wear kurtas and tops that are modest.”

A majority of degree colleges have recently introduced uniforms and the move has evoked a mixed response. Sherin Lasrado, from SDM college said, “We have to wear white on Mondays. And the rest of the days we have to wear pink and black. Saturday is the only day we have the freedom to wear other clothes. But even then, jeans aren’t allowed.” Sanjith Shenoy, from Canara College declares, “We have uniforms, and as a degree student it doesn’t make any sense to me.” Maithri Mohan, from Besant Women’s College, says “We have to wear uniform on the weekdays. Nobody likes it, but the college authorities’ reason that it is to make sure that there is equality on campus and we accept it.”

George Marko, from St. Aloysius College, believes uniform is okay as long as they don’t look stupid. “But I’d prefer different uniforms through the week so that we’ll not get bored.”

Aruna Kamath, Principal, SDM College of Business Management, explains the reason behind the move to introduce uniform.

“We initially had a uniform only for Monday. But we realised that students generally did not dress decently enough and hence we had to extend it to rest of the week.”

New Delhi:June.4:Delhi Police today invoked the stringent MCOCA against suspended cricketer S Sreesanth and 22 others in the IPL spot-fixing scandal for which the “command” originated from underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s outfit.

Following this, a Delhi court remanded Sreesanth, another player Ajit Chandila and the others to further judicial custody till June 18.

“Since the accused persons were acting on command of people based abroad like Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar and Chota Shakeel who have a continuous past record of organised crimes, provisions of Maharasthra Control of Organised Crime Act have been invoked against the accused,” police told Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain.

The court, in its order, referred to the approval granted by Joint Commissioner of Police Special Cell for invoking section 3 and 4 of MCOCA and also a report citing reasons for the same.

“It has been stated that the approval for invoking MCOCA has been accorded by Jt CP special cell on the premise that the arrested persons/ accused through extensive use of electronic and via media were in communication with each other and with their other associates, who are still absconding, including those associates who are based abroad.

“The illegal organised betting syndicate in India is being controlled by persons based abroad.

“The arrested accused persons have been found playing role of conspirators while others have been found acting as facilitators,” the court quoted from the report.

Your chance to buy BMW, Jaguars at ‘bargain’ auction prices

Some 290 impounded cars – including a few Jaguars and BMW – are being put up for auction, according to Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin, Director General of Dubai Traffic Police.

“The 290 cars will be auctioned over the internet through three companies which have been contracted by the Supreme Committee for auctions.”

These are Emirates Auction, Golden Bell Auction and Union Auction.

Maj Gen Al Zaffin disclosed that the dates of the auctions will be announced in Arab and foreign newspapers and in accordance with the procedures, a month before the scheduled date.

He added that the Supreme Committee for auctions did not specify the date of the auction yet. The next auction will be the seventh as six auctions have been organised since 2007.

Maj Gen Al Zaffin said the seized luxury cars such as Ferrari Enzo will not be offered for sale at the next auction.

He added a special auction for the luxury cars will be organized in the near future.

He mentioned that the Traffic Department will make an inventory to determine the number of luxury cars which are impounded for more than 6 months, to be included in the planned auction.

He said the cars up for auction do not have cases pending in courts, and neither are they required by Interpol.

Law 34 of 2008 says impounded cars can be auctioned after the passage of 6 months during which owners have made no efforts to have them released.

It also requires such cars not be part of cases pending in courts or involved in cases of Interpol.

He revealed that the next auction which will included 290 cars includes 20 Mitsubishi cars (including Lancer and pickups etc), 3 Jaguars, and about 60 Nissan (including Tida, Sunny and Altima) cars.

There are also Toyota (including Lexus Prado, Land Cruiser and Mark 2), Peugeot, Ford Mustang, Jeep Cherokee, BMW, Honda (Civic and Accord), etc.

Maj Gen Al Zaffin said that there are also older models such as Nissan Laurel and Sunny 1983 as well there are new models such as the Peugeot 2007 and Land Cruiser 2010.

Lt Colonel Nabil Abdullah, Director of police vehicles and the member of the Supreme Committee for Auctions, said the price of the cars listed for auctions is estimated according to the average account for four estimates, the first estimate through the police, and the other three estimations by the three auctions companies.

The four estimates are collated and an average price is drawn as the price of the car offered for sale.

He said the vehicles will be submitted to the auto auction companies this month. This should take a few weeks. The proceeds will be submitted to the police, after deducting 2 per cent commissions on the sales.

Campaigning ends, stage set for tomorrow’s poll

Bangalore:May.4:The month-long, high-pitched public canvassing that saw national leaders of major political parties and film stars sweat it out to woo voters ended on Friday, setting the stage for polling on May 5 in the State. Counting of votes is scheduled on May 8.

However, the campaign on the last day on Friday largely remained low-key. Senior leaders confined themselves to holding press briefings, while candidates conducted door-to-door campaign and held road shows.

Though Congress leaders Kapil Sibal and Sheila Dikshit were in Bangalore, they did not take part in any public campaign. None of the BJP Delhi leaders were in Bangalore.

With curtains coming down on public campaign, the Election Commission (EC) directed that all party leaders and workers who do not belong to respective constituencies should leave. Hence, majority of the State leaders of all the parties remained confined to their constituencies on Friday. BJP national general secretary Ananth Kumar held a road show in Basavanagudi and actors Vijay and Ganesh campaigned for BJP candidate in Padmanabhnagar. JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy campaigned in Mandya and Kolar districts.

The candidates can conduct padayatra on Saturday. As many as 2,939 candidates are in the fray for the 223 seats. Polling in Periyapatna has been postponed to May 28 following the death of the BJP candidate.

The BJP and the Congress accused each other of corruption, a major issue in the State. While the Congress accused the BJP of creating a record of sorts in corruption in Karnataka, the saffron party retorted by highlighting 2G, coalgate and Commonwealth games scams. Both chanted “sakappa saku” (enough is enough) mantra, calling for end of corruption.

Regional parties, the JD(S) led by H D Deve Gowda, the KJP led by B S Yeddyurappa and the BSR Congress led by B Sriramulu, left no stone unturned in attracting the attention of matabandavaru (electorate) by making a strong pitch for a regional force coming to power in the State. They accused the two national parties of letting down the State’s interest. Gowda and Yeddyurappa went to the extent of shedding tears in public. Gowda’s daughter-in-law Anitha Kumaraswamy, too, wept in Channapatna where she is the party candidate.

Though top leaders of both the national parties had hit the campaign trail, it was NaMo-RaGa duel (Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi) that stole the show. Modi’s public rally in Bangalore, Belgaum and Mangalore came as a moral booster to the party. Rahul was the star campaigner for the Congress.

BJP president Rajnath Singh, senior leaders L K Advani Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitely campaigned for the party. The Congress had Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and many Union minister seeking votes.

Besides, political parties added glitz and glamour to their campaigns by roping in cine stars. Telugu actor and Union minister Chiranjeevi was a big hit in Tumkur, Kolar, Anekal (Bangalore urban district) and Bellary, where he campaigned for the Congress. Among Kannada actors who hit the campaign trail were Ramya, Bhavana (Congress), Tara, Ganesh (BJP) and Shruti (KJP). Actor Pooja Gandhi is the BSR Congress candidate from Raichur while veteran actor Ambareesh is contesting from Mandya.

This apart, all parties and their candidates extensively used technology and social media to reach out to the voters. However, padayatras (door-to-door campaign) remained the favourite mode of campaigning. There was only one incident of hate speech by BJP leader K S Eshwarappa in Shimoga. Till Friday evening, the Election Commission had registered 696 cases for various election-related offences and received 2,097 complaints on model code violations.

14 injured in blast near Bangalore BJP office

Bangalore:April.17: An explosion near the BJP office in Malleswaram injured at least 14 people, including eight policemen, who were in a KSRP van stationed near the office for election security duty, here on Wednesday morning.

Two cars and 2 two-wheelers were completely gutted, while the KSRP van was damaged in the explosion, which occurred around 10.20 am in the crowded residential locality.
Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar confirmed that the blast was triggered by an explosive device on a bike parked between the two cars. Initial reports suggested that the explosion was caused by an LPG cylinder blast from a Maruti Omni van, owned by a BJP party worker.

The last blast reported in Bangalore was exactly three years ago, on the same date, ahead of an IPL match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Senior police sources said initial investigations have revealed that a “timer-based, IED (improvised explosive device) fitted on a blue Suzuki bike” caused the blast. The police suspect that the bike was parked there overnight. Police sources also said that CCTV footage from cameras installed outside the BJP office may aid the investigation.

Meanwhile, L.R. Pachau, Director-General and Inspector-General of Police, told reporters that currently only the blast could be confirmed. “The police are still investigating into the kind of explosive that was used.”

Glass and smoke everywhere

The site of the blast is covered with glass pieces, from the shattered window panes of vehicles in the area. Venkateshaiah, a KSRP head constable, who was having breakfast inside the van when the blast occurred, told The Hindu that the impact of the blast was huge.

“We heard a loud explosion, and before we knew it our window panes shattered and there was thick black smoke everywhere. We couldn’t see anything initially but somehow made our way out of the van,” he said. When the smoke cleared up a bit he saw people lying on the road, most of whom had either collapsed

due to the smoke or had been injured by the glass pieces from the shattered window panes.

Among the injured was Nisha, a II PUC student, who was returning home after her tuition classes. The injured were rushed to KC General Hospital. Authorities at the hospital confirmed that none of those brought in were critical.

Mr. Venkateshaiah added that the police van had just been moved there – about 500 metres from the BJP party office – an hour back after the party workers complained that it was obstructing traffic there.

The entire street has been cordoned off. The bomb squad, the National Investigative Agency and IB officers are all present at the spot. Home Minister R. Ashok also visited the party office and inspected the blast site

Hospital offers to help child with swollen head

New Delhi:April.15: A top private hospital offered on Monday to examine the 18-month-old girl suffering from a rare illness that has caused her head to swell to more than double its normal size.

The decision raises hope that eighteen-month-old Roona Begum, who suffers from hydrocephalus, a disorder which causes cerebrospinal fluid to build up on the brain, will get the life-saving surgery she urgently requires.

She was discovered last week living with her impoverished parents who are too poor to pay for treatment for the condition, which has resulted in her head swelling to a circumference of 91-centimetres.

The pictures taken by an AFP photographer in remote Tripura state in north-east India last Friday led numerous well-wishers to step forward offering donations, while a website has been set up to collect money for her.

A leading neurosurgeon Sandeep Vaishya, who is the head of neurosurgery at the Fortis group near the capital, said that he would examine the girl and see if surgery was possible.

“Fortis will fly her down and while we will have to do an MRI to check the condition of her brain, I am hopeful that we will be able to carry out a surgery and relieve the pressure on the poor child’s brain,” Vaishya said. The group has a charitable foundation which carries out surgery free of charge.

Her 18-year-old father, Abdul Rahman, who lives in a mud hut with his family in the village of Jirania Khola, earlier said that only a “miracle” could save his daughter’s life. The swelling is putting pressure on her brain and has made it impossible for her to sit upright or crawl on the ground.

Local doctors had told the family to take the newborn to a private hospital but the costs were too high for Rahman, an illiterate labourer who earns 150 rupees ($2.75) a day working in a brick plant.

The most common treatment involves the surgical insertion of a mechanism to drain cerebrospinal fluid away from the brain and towards another part of the body where it can be easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Extreme cases like Roona’s are very rare, according to Vaishya, who said he had been deluged with calls about the child after he spoke to agencies on Saturday.

“The child must be in a lot of pain because her head is so heavy. Still, in the images I could see that she was smiling sometimes, which makes me think that her cognitive functions might still be intact,” Vaishya said. Surgery to treat hydrocephalus is not particularly risky, Vaishya added.
